Vehicle Types & Tow Capacity

Here’s a quick overview of the common vehicle classes and their typical towing capabilities:

  • Compact SUVs (e.g., Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson): Tow up to 1,500 lb—ideal for bike racks or cargo trailers.
  • Mid-size SUVs (e.g., Toyota Highlander, Ford Edge): Tow up to 3,500 lb—great for small campers or utility trailers.
  • Full-size vans (e.g., Dodge Grand Caravan, Ford Transit Connect): Tow up to 3,500 lb or more—capable of hauling larger loads.
  • Pickup alternatives: While we don’t offer pickup trucks, certain vans and SUVs fill that role for moderate towing needs.

Tow capacity depends on the specific model and manufacturer. We help you confirm exact specs when you reserve.

Booking Steps for a Hitch Rental

Here’s the step-by-step process to secure your hitch-equipped vehicle:

1. Book online or call our branch and request the vehicle with a towing hitch.

2. Specify your needs—trailer size, estimated towing weight, and any electrical/towing accessories needed.

3. Confirm tow capacity and licensing—we’ll verify your qualification to tow based on our vehicle specs and licensing rules.

4. Pick up and inspect—our team walks you through hook-up points, wiring, weight limits, and safety protocols.

5. Haul, tow, and return—drop off the vehicle and any rented trailers or accessories on your return date.

Safety & Licensing Requirements

  • Driver qualifications: You must hold a valid driver’s license for the vehicle class and towing destination. Some longer trailers may require higher-class licensing.
  • Towing safety: We ensure vehicles meet legal standards for trailer brakes, wiring, reflectors, and load securement.
  • Insurance coverage: Our collision/loss damage waiver (CDW) and third-party liability (TPL) cover standard towing—check your policy at booking.
  • Mileage and weight limits: Drivers are responsible for towing within legal weight limits. Additional mileage charges may apply if usage exceeds your rental agreement.

Use Cases & Customer Tips

  • Weekend camping: Tow a small travel trailer, pack bikes or kayaks, and explore scenic BC or Alberta parks.
  • DIY moves: Use a utility trailer to transport furniture, equipment, or garden supplies without renting a truck.
  • Outdoor sports: Haul snowmobiles, mountain bikes, or ATVs for an active weekend trip.
  • Event logistics: Tow gear, tables, or trade-show materials to events with ease.

Top Tips from our team:

  • Estimate your towing weight accurately—always stay under the vehicle’s tow rating including hitch weight.
  • Distribute loads evenly across your trailer floor and secure them firmly.
  • Check wiring and brakes before leaving, and test tail lights and signal lights.
  • Drive cautiously—allow more braking distance, and avoid sharp turns or sudden maneuvers.
