Demystifying Car Rental Insurance: How It Works and What You Actually Need

Car Rental

If you’ve ever rolled up to a car rental desk and been confused by all the insurance options flung your way, don’t worry, you’re among friends. You’ve heard of Collision Damage Waiver and Personal Accident Insurance, but it’s like a foreign language. And if you’re just trying to get your vehicle and on the road, you don’t want to feel rushed or annoyed.

But here’s the good news—it’s not as muddled as it seems. When you understand the basics, you’ll know what to do and not to do. This blog explains it all in plain English—no jargon, no anxiety.

So, What Is Car Rental Insurance?

Rental car insurance is coverage that protects you and the rented car in case something does go wrong—like an accident, theft, or damage—while you’re driving the vehicle. Remember, this is not your car, so the rental company wants to make sure that they’re not left paying the bill.

You can usually buy insurance through:

  • Your own automobile insurance policy
  • A credit card that has rental protection
  • The rental company’s own car insurance policies

Let’s take a look at each so you’ll know what’s what.

1. Your Car Insurance Might Pay for Rentals

car rental insurance

If you already own a car and insurance, you could be partially covered when you rent one. Most individual policies do cover rentals—at least in your home country. So before you rent, call your insurer and find out what’s covered.

Few individuals know that their current policy includes liability and even collision. If so, you can opt out of part of the rental agency’s optional extras and save some money.

2. Credit Card Coverage Can Be a Hidden Benefit

Some credit cards offer insurance if you use the card to pay for the rental. It is usually secondary after your own insurance, and it usually covers something such as damage or theft. Just ensure you read the fine print on your card or call the company beforehand.

For travel from Canada, you can also check the ICBC website if you do not know what your insurance does.

3. Rental Company Insurance Plans

If you don’t have a car, or if you just want to have some peace of mind—then you can buy insurance from the rental agency. It’s convenient for visitors, foreigners, or those who don’t have a car.

These are the typical plans you’ll see at Mr. Rent a Car

  • Supplemental Liability Coverage
  • Optional Damage Waiver Standard
  • Optional Damage Waiver and SLC.
  • Optional Damage Waiver (Peace of Mind)

You need not purchase all of these. Just pick what you are comfortable with, and omit what you don’t require. To know more about these coverages visit www.mrrentacar.com today.

What If You Don’t Purchase Coverage and Something Does Go Wrong?

upset man after car crash If you've ever rolled up to a car rental desk and been confused by all the insurance options flung your way, don't worry, you're among friends. You've heard of Collision Damage Waiver and Personal Accident Insurance, but it's like a foreign language. And if you're just trying to get your vehicle and on the road, you don't want to feel rushed or annoyed.

If you’re saying no to all of the coverage and something occurs, you’ll be paying for the full damage—or worse, injuries. That’s the reason even budget-conscious travelers will at least acquire basic coverage, particularly if their own or credit card insurance does not cover them.

When To Buy the Rental Company’s Insurance?

You would want to acquire it if:

  • You don’t have a car or auto insurance
  • You’re visiting outside of the country
  • You’re not sure your personal policy or credit card will cover you
  • You desire no hassles and easy claims

Companies like Mr. Rent a Car do make it all simpler by describing the options in simple terms. Wherever you’re renting, Richmond, Burnaby, Calgary, or from YVR Airport, their people walk you through each policy without hassle or surprise.

Tips to Keep It Simple

  • Call ahead to your auto insurance company
  • Look at coverage information on your credit card
  • Make the rental personnel define anything unclear
  • Always read before signing
  • Take photos of the car before departing
