Hire Cars

1. Choosing the Right Car for Your Journey

The best car for your trip depends on where you are going. Vancouver has many different kinds of roads.

Small and Economy Cars

If you plan to stay mostly in the city—visiting places like Stanley Park, Gastown, or the many shopping malls—a small car is a great choice.

  • Easy Parking: Vancouver’s parking spots can be very tight. A small car fits easily into these spaces.
  • Save on Fuel: Small cars use less gas, which helps you save money for nice dinners and souvenirs.

SUVs and All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

If you want to drive to Whistler, Squamish, or the Fraser Valley, an SUV is the better option.

  • Better Views: You sit higher up, so you can see the ocean and mountains better over the road barriers.
  • Space for Gear: SUVs have big trunks for skis, snowboards, or large suitcases.
  • Safety: AWD helps the car stay steady on wet or mountain roads.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Vancouver has many charging stations. If you want a quiet ride and want to help the environment, look for an electric car. Many rental places now have these available for 2026.

2. Documents You Need to Bring

To get a hire cars vancouver service, you must be prepared at the rental desk.

Your Driver’s License

You must have a valid license from your home country. It should be the original plastic card. If your license is not in English or French, you should also bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). This is a simple document that translates your license so the staff can read it.

A Major Credit Card

Most companies require a credit card in the name of the main driver. They will put a “hold” on some money as a security deposit. This is not a charge, but it makes sure there is money if the car is returned with damage. Make sure your card has enough limit for this.

Age Rules

In British Columbia, you usually need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car. If you are under 25, you might have to pay an extra “young driver fee” every day. Some luxury cars might also be restricted to older drivers.

3. Understanding Insurance and Safety

Insurance is there to protect you. It is very important to know what you are paying for.

Third-Party Liability

In British Columbia, all cars must have basic insurance from a provider called ICBC. This covers damage to other people or their property. This is usually included in your rental.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

The company will ask if you want to buy a CDW. This means if the rental car gets a scratch or a dent, you only pay a small part of the repair cost.

  • Pro Tip: Check your own credit card benefits. Many “Gold” or “Platinum” cards give you rental car insurance for free. If your card has this, you can save money by saying no to the company’s extra insurance.

Roadside Support

This is an extra service that helps if you get a flat tire, lock your keys in the car, or run out of gas. It is good to have if you are driving into the quiet mountain areas.

4. Local Driving Rules and Etiquette

To stay safe and avoid fines, follow these simple rules:

Drive on the Right

In Canada, we drive on the right side of the road. If you come from a country that drives on the left, take a few minutes to get used to the car in a quiet parking lot first.

No Phones While Driving

British Columbia has very strict laws about phones. You cannot touch or hold your phone while driving—even at a red light. Set up your GPS before you start the car and use a hands-free holder.

Right Turn on Red

Unless there is a sign that says “No Right Turn on Red,” you can turn right at a red light. You must stop completely first, check for pedestrians, and make sure no other cars are coming.

School and Playground Zones

Watch for yellow signs near parks and schools. The speed limit is much lower here to keep children safe. Police watch these areas closely, so be careful with your speed.

 Vancouver

5. Seasonal Advice for Travelers

Vancouver’s weather changes how you should drive.

Winter Tires (October to April)

If you drive on highways outside the city in winter, the law says you must have winter tires. These have a snowflake or “M+S” symbol on the side. The rental company will usually provide these if you are heading to the mountains.

Rain City

Vancouver gets a lot of rain. When it is raining, the roads can be slippery. Give yourself extra space behind the car in front of you and keep your headlights on so others can see you.

6. How to Inspect Your Rental Car

Before you drive away, follow these steps to protect your money:

The Walk-Around Video

Use your phone to take a slow video of the whole car. Record the bumpers, the glass, and the wheels. If you see a scratch, show it to the staff and make sure they write it down. This proves you did not cause the damage.

Check the Interior

Make sure the air conditioning and the heater work. Check the gas gauge to see if the tank is full. If there are stains on the seats, tell the staff before you leave.

7. Great Places to Visit by Car

Once you have your car, here are the top places to go:

  1. The Sea-to-Sky Highway: A beautiful drive from Vancouver to Whistler. You will see huge mountains and the ocean.
  2. The Sunshine Coast: Take your car on a ferry boat to see quiet coastal towns and beautiful parks.
  3. The Fraser Valley: Drive east to see local farms, wineries, and beautiful rivers.

8. Returning the Car Correctly

To avoid extra fees, remember these tips:

The 24-Hour Rule

Rentals are based on 24 hours. If you pick up at 10 AM, return at 10 AM. If you are late, you might be charged for a whole extra day.

Fill the Gas Tank

Most companies want the car returned with a full tank. Gas stations right next to the airport can be expensive. Try to find one a few minutes away to save money.
