Rent Car in Vancouver Airport: A Simple, Honest Guide with Mr. Rent A Car

Rent Car in Vancouver Airport

If you want to rent car in Vancouver airport, you have come to the right place. Getting around Vancouver and British Columbia is so much easier when you have your own vehicle. The city is big, the mountains are nearby, and some of the best places to visit simply cannot be reached by bus or train. Mr. Rent A Car has been helping people rent a car at Vancouver airport since 1996. The process is simple, the prices are fair, and there are no nasty surprises when you get to the counter.

This guide explains everything you need to know before you arrive how the pickup works, which car to choose, what documents to bring, and how to make the most of your time in British Columbia. Read it once and you will feel confident from the moment you step off the plane.

Why Renting a Car at Vancouver Airport Is a Good Idea

A lot of people wonder whether they really need a car in Vancouver. The short answer is: it depends on what you want to do. If you plan to stay downtown and walk around, you might manage without one. But if you want to see the real British Columbia, you need a car.

Public Transit Only Goes So Far

The Canada Line train connects Vancouver airport to downtown in about 26 minutes. That sounds great — and for a simple city trip it is fine. The problem is that transit does not take you to Whistler, North Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, or the Okanagan wine country. Those places are only reachable by car. And even around the city, carrying bags and luggage on a crowded train is not much fun after a long flight.

Rideshare Gets Expensive Fast

Yes, you can use Uber or Lyft in Vancouver. But prices go up when it is raining, during rush hour, on Friday evenings, and when lots of flights land at the same time. On a busy day at the airport, you could end up paying two or three times the normal rate just to get to your hotel. When you book a car with Mr. Rent A Car in advance, the price is fixed. No surprises.

BC Is Made for Road Trips

British Columbia is one of the most beautiful places on earth to drive. The Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler. The ferry to Vancouver Island. The drive through the Fraser Valley. The Okanagan wine region. These are experiences that you simply cannot have without a car. Renting at Vancouver airport means your road trip starts the moment you land.

Mr. Rent A Car at Vancouver Airport: How It All Works

You might be wondering why you should choose Mr. Rent A Car instead of the car rental desks you can see inside the airport terminal. There is a simple reason: those desks charge much more. Here is why.

Off-Airport Means You Pay Less

The rental companies inside YVR pay big fees to the airport just to have a desk there. Those fees get added to your bill. Mr. Rent A Car is based just five minutes away from the airport at 7780 River Road in Richmond. Because the company is not paying airport terminal fees, you pay a lower price for the same quality vehicle. For a rental that lasts several days, that saving adds up to a meaningful amount.

Free Shuttle from the Airport

Here is exactly what to do when you land at Vancouver airport:

  • Collect your bags and clear customs.
  • Once you are in the arrivals area, call Mr. Rent A Car on 604-303-0063.
  • Tell them you have landed and they will direct you to the right shuttle pickup spot.
  • Domestic and international arrivals have separate pickup areas outside the terminal.
  • The free shuttle will take you to 7780 River Road in Richmond.
  • The drive takes about five to ten minutes.

There is nothing to pay for the shuttle. It is free for all airport customers.

Five Locations to Choose From

Mr. Rent A Car has five pickup and drop-off locations across Vancouver and Calgary. You can pick up at the airport and return the car somewhere else if you need to. Here are the locations:

  • YVR — Vancouver International Airport Offsite (7780 River Road, Richmond)
  • Richmond — 7780 River Road
  • Vancouver — 838 Drake Street
  • Burnaby — 6322 Kingsway
  • YYC — Calgary International Airport Offsite

Staying in the City? Go Small

If your trip is mostly in Vancouver — Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown, Robson Street — a compact or economy car is your best friend. Downtown parking is tight and not cheap. A smaller car fits into more spaces, costs less to fill up, and is easier to drive through narrow streets. The Chevrolet Spark and Kia Rio are both solid choices for city driving.

Heading to the Mountains? Go Bigger

If Whistler is on your list, or any mountain road between October and April, you need a midsize SUV with all-wheel drive. The Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V all handle mountain roads well and have enough boot space for ski bags and luggage. These are the most popular choices for the Sea-to-Sky Highway drive and for anyone spending time in the North Shore mountains.

Travelling with a Group? Get a Minivan

If you are travelling with four or more people, a minivan is almost always more comfortable than an SUV. The Chrysler Grand Caravan seats seven and the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna seat eight. The sliding doors make loading easier at ferry terminals and ski resort car parks. Plenty of leg room for everyone, and enough boot space to not be playing luggage Tetris every time you stop.

Want to Go Electric?

British Columbia has one of the best EV charging networks in Canada, so renting electric here actually makes sense. The Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Mazda MX-30 EV, and Mercedes-Benz EQB are all available at the YVR location. For city and Lower Mainland trips, range is not a concern. If you are heading to Kelowna or further, check charging stations in advance using PlugShare or the Tesla app. Note that EV models are only available to drivers aged 25 and over.

Security Deposits: What Gets Held and When It Comes Back

When you pick up your car, a temporary hold is placed on your credit card. This is not a charge — it is just a hold to cover any unexpected costs during the rental. Once you return the car in good condition, the hold is released. Here are the exact amounts.

Vehicle TypeDriver Age 25+Driver Age 21 to 24
Economy to Full-Size Sedan$500 CAD hold$1,000 CAD hold
SUV, Minivan, Premium, Pickup (6+ seats)$1,000 CAD holdCall the office
Luxury and Sport Models$2,500 CAD holdCall the office

The hold is released within a few business days after you return the car. You need a major credit card for this — Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and cash are not accepted for the deposit. Make sure your card has enough available credit to cover both the hold and the rental cost at the same time.

How to Rent a Car at Vancouver Airport: Step by Step

Here is the whole process from start to finish. Follow these steps and everything will go smoothly.

  1. Book Your Car Online — Do This Early

Go to mrrentacar.com and choose YVR – Vancouver International Airport Offsite as your pickup location. Pick your dates and choose a vehicle that fits your trip. Book at least two weeks before you travel — fleet availability drops fast in summer and during ski season, and prices are lower when you book early. Save your confirmation email. It has your booking number and the shuttle phone number you will need when you land.

  • Check Your Insurance Before You Fly

Before you leave home, call your personal car insurance company and your credit card provider. Ask them whether your coverage includes rental cars in Canada. Many premium credit cards include this as a free benefit. If yours does, you might not need to pay for the optional insurance at the counter. Bring the original written policy if you plan to use your own coverage — photocopies are not accepted.

  • Land at YVR and Call the Shuttle

Once you have picked up your bags and cleared customs, call 604-303-0063 from the arrivals area. Tell the team you have landed and they will direct you to the right pickup spot outside the terminal. International and domestic arrivals use different pickup areas. The free shuttle will take you to 7780 River Road in Richmond. The journey takes about five to ten minutes.

  • Bring the Right Documents to the Counter

You need three things: your original driver’s licence (no photocopies), the credit card you used to book, and your booking confirmation. If your licence is not in English or French, bring your International Driving Permit as well as the original. If you are adding extra drivers, they need to be there in person with their own licences.

  • Read the Agreement Before You Sign

Take a minute to read through the rental agreement before signing. Check the vehicle class, pickup and return times, fuel level, and insurance details. If you requested a GPS unit or child seat, make sure it is on the agreement. If the return time does not match your plans, sort it now — changing it later costs a $20 fee and the daily rate might go up.

  • Do the Car Inspection — This Is Really Important

Before you drive away, walk around the whole car with a member of the Mr. Rent A Car team. Look at every panel, bumper, and window. Make sure any existing scratches or dents are written on the condition report. Then take a short video on your phone of all four sides of the car. This takes three minutes and will protect your deposit if there are any questions about damage when you return the car.

  • Drive and Keep Your Papers in the Glove Box

Put your rental agreement and the roadside assistance number in the glove box before you leave. If a warning light comes on, pull over and call the helpline before driving on — continuing with an active warning can affect your cover. Stick to speed limits. BC uses automated speed cameras and any fines go to your credit card plus an admin charge.

  • Return the Car on Time and with the Right Fuel Level

Fill the tank before you return to 7780 River Road. All rentals work on a level-to-level fuel policy — return the car at the same fuel level as when you picked it up. There is a 30-minute grace period on returns. After that, extra charges apply. After 120 minutes late, a full extra day is charged. Complete the final check with the team, hand over the keys, and the deposit hold will be released within a few business days.

Simple Driving Tips for Getting Around Vancouver

Vancouver is not a hard city to drive in, but a few things are worth knowing before you get behind the wheel.

Watch Out for Rush Hour

Vancouver has some busy bridges and tunnels. The Lions Gate Bridge and Ironworkers Memorial Bridge connect the city to North Vancouver. The Massey Tunnel connects to the south. All of these slow down between 7 and 9 in the morning and 4 and 6:30 in the evening on weekdays. If you are driving from the airport into the city or heading north to Whistler, try to leave outside those hours if you can.

Winter Tires on Mountain Roads

If you are renting between October and April and planning to drive to Whistler or any other mountain route, winter tires are legally required on Highway 99 and several other BC mountain highways during those months. Ask the Mr. Rent A Car team at the time of booking about vehicles with winter tires or all-wheel drive. Do not leave this until the day of pickup — ask when you book so the right vehicle is ready for you.

No Phones While Driving

BC law is strict about this. You cannot use a handheld phone while driving — not even at a red light. The fines are heavy. Use a phone mount or pull over safely if you need to check your route. Speed cameras are common on main roads around Vancouver and any tickets issued to the rental car come straight back to your credit card along with an admin fee from Mr. Rent A Car.

Parking in the City

Downtown Vancouver has plenty of parking buildings and the EasyPark app makes paying easy. Street parking near Robson Street and Granville fills up quickly on weekday evenings. For Stanley Park, get there before 9 in the morning on summer weekends if you want a parking spot without a long wait. Near the airport, there are a few petrol stations on the main roads — useful to know for your last fill before returning the car.

Best Road Trips from Vancouver Airport

Once you have the keys, British Columbia is yours to explore. Here are four trips worth taking.

Whistler via the Sea-to-Sky Highway — 2 Hours

Drive north on Highway 99 and watch the scenery change from city to coast to mountain. Shannon Falls, Squamish, and the Tantalus mountain range are all on the way. In good summer conditions the drive to Whistler village takes about two hours. In winter, go slowly, check conditions on DriveBC before you leave, and make sure your vehicle has AWD and winter tires. This is the most popular road trip from Vancouver airport and for good reason.

Vancouver Island via BC Ferry — 3.5 Hours Total

Drive about 30 minutes south of the airport to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. Board a BC Ferry to Swartz Bay near Victoria. The 95-minute sailing through the Gulf Islands is beautiful. Victoria city centre is 25 minutes from Swartz Bay. Mr. Rent A Car allows ferry travel to Vancouver Island under standard rental agreements. Book your sailing in advance during busy periods — summer weekends and long weekends fill up fast.

Harrison Hot Springs — 1 Hour 20 Minutes

Head east on Highway 1 through Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Harrison Hot Springs is a relaxed little town known for its natural hot springs, Harrison Lake, and the Harrison Hot Springs Resort. This makes a great day trip from Vancouver and a compact car handles the drive easily any time of year.

The Okanagan Wine Country — 4 Hours

Take the Coquihalla Highway east to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. This is BC wine country — warm summers, beautiful lakes, and rows of vineyards. Plan for three or four days to do it properly. A comfortable sedan or SUV handles the drive well in summer. In winter the mountain passes on this route require winter tires, so check conditions before you go.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rent a car at Vancouver airport?

Book online at mrrentacar.com and select YVR as your pickup location. When you land, call 604-303-0063 from the arrivals area. The free shuttle will take you to the depot at 7780 River Road in Richmond in about five to ten minutes. Bring your original driver’s licence, the credit card used for the booking, and your confirmation. Sign the agreement, do the walkaround, and drive away.

Is it cheaper to rent a car off-airport at YVR?

Yes. The car rental desks inside the YVR terminal pay heavy fees to the airport, and those fees get passed on to you. Mr. Rent A Car operates just outside the airport boundary, avoids those extra costs, and offers lower rates for the same vehicles. For a rental of several days, the difference can be significant.

What is the minimum age to rent a car at Vancouver airport?

You need to be at least 19 years old. Drivers aged 19 to 24 can rent but will pay a young driver daily surcharge. Luxury cars, electric vehicles, and some SUVs are only available to drivers aged 25 and over. Check the age rules for your chosen vehicle when you book.

What documents do I need to rent a car at YVR?

You need your original government-issued driver’s licence, the major credit card used to make the booking, and your booking confirmation. If your licence is in a language other than English or French, you also need an International Driving Permit alongside the original. All extra drivers must be present at the counter with their original licences.

Can I use a debit card to rent a car at Vancouver airport?

No. A major credit card is required for the security deposit hold — Visa, Mastercard, or American Express only. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and cash are not accepted for the deposit. Make sure your card has enough available credit to cover the deposit hold and the rental cost together.

How much is the deposit to rent a car at Vancouver airport?

For economy to full-size cars: $500 CAD for drivers aged 25 and over, $1,000 CAD for drivers aged 21 to 24. For SUVs, minivans, and premium vehicles: $1,000 CAD for drivers aged 25 and over. For luxury and sport cars: $2,500 CAD. These are temporary holds, not charges. The hold is released within a few business days after you return the car in good condition.

Are winter tires available when I rent a car at Vancouver airport?

Winter tires are not standard on all vehicles. If you are renting between October and April and plan to drive on mountain roads — especially Highway 99 to Whistler, where winter tires are legally required — ask the team at the time of booking about vehicles with dedicated winter tires or all-wheel drive. Raise this when you book, not on the day of pickup.

Can I take my rental car on a BC Ferry?

Yes. BC Ferries carry vehicles of all sizes and ferry travel is permitted under standard Mr. Rent A Car agreements. The main terminal for Vancouver Island is Tsawwassen, about 30 minutes south of the airport. Book your ferry crossing in advance during summer weekends and public holidays to avoid long waits at the terminal.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

If your flight will be more than two hours late, call Mr. Rent A Car on 604-303-0063 before your original pickup time. During busy seasons, vehicles may be released if the rental office is not informed of a delay within 30 minutes of the booked pickup time. One quick call is all it takes to protect your reservation.

Can I return my rental car to a different location?

Yes. Mr. Rent A Car has locations in Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, and Calgary. If you want to pick up at the airport and return somewhere else, arrange this at the time of booking. Extra fees may apply depending on the route. One-way returns to locations outside BC also need to be confirmed with the team before you depart.
