The 8 Best Road Trips From Vancouver

Here are eight of the best drives from the city, from a quick day trip to a longer adventure. Each one shows you a different side of British Columbia.

1. Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish and Whistler

This is the most famous drive from Vancouver, and for good reason. The Sea to Sky highway runs along the coast with ocean on one side and mountains on the other. Stop in Squamish for the Sea to Sky Gondola and the Stawamus Chief. Carry on to Whistler for the village, the peaks, and year round fun. Whistler sits about 120 kilometres from the city, so it is an easy day trip or a weekend stay.

Distance: about 120 km to Whistler   |   Best for: mountains, hiking, skiing   |   Car tip: an SUV for winter grip

2. Vancouver to Victoria on Vancouver Island

Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and a lovely island city. You reach it by ferry from the Tsawwassen terminal to Swartz Bay, then a short drive into town. The sailing itself is scenic, with islands and open water along the way. In Victoria you get the Inner Harbour, historic streets, and Butchart Gardens nearby. Book the ferry ahead, since it can fill up in summer.

Distance: ferry plus a short drive   |   Best for: island city, gardens, history   |   Car tip: book the ferry with your car in advance

3. Vancouver to Tofino and the Pacific Coast

Tofino sits on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, and the drive there is an adventure. You take the ferry to the island, then drive across to the Pacific Rim, with forests, lakes, and mountain passes on the way. Tofino rewards you with long surf beaches, old growth trees, and big ocean views. This is a longer trip, so plan an overnight stay rather than a rushed day.

Distance: ferry plus a long island drive   |   Best for: surf beaches, rainforest   |   Car tip: a comfortable SUV for the long drive

Best Road Trips From Vancouver

4. Vancouver to the Okanagan Wine Country

The Okanagan is British Columbia’s wine and lake country, and it is a favourite summer escape. The drive east takes you over mountain passes and into a warmer, drier valley. Kelowna sits about 390 kilometres from Vancouver, roughly a four hour drive. There you find lakes, beaches, orchards, and dozens of wineries. It is a great trip for a long weekend in the sun.

Distance: about 390 km to Kelowna   |   Best for: wine, lakes, summer sun   |   Car tip: a sedan or SUV for the highway

5. The Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is a quiet, laid back stretch of coast just a short ferry from the city. You sail from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, then follow the coastal road through small seaside towns like Gibsons and Sechelt. It feels like a world away, yet it is close to home. This is a lovely trip for a slow day of coves, beaches, and fresh sea air.

Distance: short ferry plus coastal driving   |   Best for: quiet coast, small towns   |   Car tip: any car works, book the ferry ahead

6. Fraser Valley and Harrison Hot Springs

For an easy day trip, head east into the Fraser Valley. The valley is full of farms, berry fields, and mountain views. Carry on to Harrison Hot Springs, a lakeside village known for its warm mineral waters. Harrison sits about 130 kilometres from Vancouver, so it is a simple drive out and back. It is a relaxing trip that suits families and a slower pace.

Distance: about 130 km to Harrison   |   Best for: hot springs, farms, easy day trip   |   Car tip: a compact car is plenty

7. Vancouver to Banff and the Rockies

This is the big one. The drive from Vancouver to Banff crosses British Columbia and into Alberta, through the heart of the Rocky Mountains. It is a long trip of around 840 kilometres, so most people take two days or more and stop along the way. The reward is some of the most stunning scenery in the world, with Banff, Lake Louise, and the mountain parks. A one way rental to Calgary can make this trip easier.

Distance: about 840 km to Banff   |   Best for: the Rockies, a bucket list drive   |   Car tip: an SUV, and ask about a one way rental

Best Road Trips From Vancouver

8. Manning Park and the Similkameen

For a quieter mountain trip, head to Manning Park on the drive toward the Similkameen valley. The route climbs through forests and alpine meadows, with hiking, lakes, and wildlife along the way. Beyond the park, the Similkameen valley offers small towns, fruit stands, and a warm, dry feel. It is a great choice if you want mountains without the crowds of the more famous routes.

Distance: a few hours east of the city   |   Best for: alpine scenery, quiet roads   |   Car tip: an SUV for mountain roads

The Best Car for a BC Road Trip

The right car makes a road trip better. For a short and easy drive like the Fraser Valley or the Sunshine Coast, a compact or a sedan is plenty. For longer drives, more comfort helps, so a sedan or a midsize SUV is a smart pick. For the mountains, the snow, or a group with gear, an SUV gives you space and grip.

If you travel with a family or a group, a seven seat SUV or a minivan keeps everyone together with room for bags. Tell us your route and your group, and we will match the right car to your trip.

Winter and Mountain Driving Tips

Many of these drives climb into the mountains, so the weather matters. In the colder months, snow and ice are common on the higher routes. Some BC highways require winter tyres from early October to the end of April, including the Sea to Sky highway. So plan your car and your timing for the season.

  • Ask us for a winter ready vehicle for mountain trips in the colder months
  • Check the road and weather report before you set off
  • Drive slow in snow and keep more space in front
  • Fill the tank before long stretches with few stations
  • Carry water, snacks, and warm layers for mountain drives

With a little planning, even a winter drive is safe and calm. The mountains are worth it when you are set up for the season.

Mileage, One Way Trips, and What You Need

A road trip can cover a lot of ground, so plan the miles. If you rent from the airport or as a non local, you usually get unlimited kilometres inside the province, which suits most BC drives. If you cross into Alberta for Banff, a daily limit applies with a small fee for each extra kilometre, so tell us your route and we will set the right plan.

For a one way adventure such as Vancouver to Banff, ask about a one way rental. You can pick up in Vancouver and drop off in Calgary, so you do not have to drive all the way back. To rent you need a valid class 5 licence or the equal, a major credit card in the driver name, and your booking details.
