Minivan for Rent in Vancouver: The Honest Guide to Renting a 7 or 8 Passenger Van with Mr. Rent A Car

Minivan for Rent

Looking for a minivan for rent in Vancouver? You have come to the right place. Whether you are travelling with family, heading out with a group of friends, taking a sports team to a tournament, or just need a bigger vehicle for a road trip through British Columbia, Mr. Rent A Car has a minivan that fits. The company has been renting vehicles in Vancouver since 1996, and minivans are one of the most popular choices — especially in summer and during the ski season when families and groups need the extra space.

This guide covers everything you need to know before you book: which minivan to choose, what it costs, what documents you need, and where to pick it up. Read through it and you will feel ready to rent with confidence.

Why a Minivan Is Often the Smartest Choice for Group Travel

A lot of people assume that a large SUV is the answer for group travel. Sometimes it is. But for most families and groups of five or more, a minivan is actually the better vehicle. Here is why.

More Space Than You Think

A 7 or 8 passenger minivan gives everyone proper seats with real legroom — not the cramped third-row bench that most SUVs offer. In a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna, even tall adults sit comfortably in the back. And when you fold those rear seats down, the boot space is enormous. Ski bags, pushchairs, camping gear, suitcases for a family of six — it all fits without anyone needing to hold a bag on their lap.

Easier to Load and Unload

Sliding doors are one of those things that sound like a minor detail until you are trying to get three young children in and out of a car in a busy car park. A minivan’s sliding rear doors open wide without swinging into the car next to you. This matters at ferry terminals, ski resort car parks, hotel drop-offs, and anywhere else where space is tight. Once you have used sliding doors with kids, going back to regular doors feels like a step backwards.

Cheaper Per Person Than You Expect

When you split the daily rental cost across six, seven, or eight passengers, a minivan often works out cheaper per person than booking multiple smaller cars. You also pay for one tank of fuel instead of two, one parking space instead of two, and one set of rental paperwork instead of two. For groups, the maths usually favours the minivan.

Comfortable for Long BC Road Trips

British Columbia has some of the best road trip routes in the world — the Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler, the ferry to Vancouver Island, the drive through the Okanagan. These are long journeys. A minivan makes them comfortable for everyone. Passengers can shift around, stretch out, and the ride quality in vehicles like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna is genuinely good for a long day on the road.

Which Minivan Can You Rent? The Full Mr. Rent A Car Minivan Fleet

Mr. Rent A Car offers several minivan options at the Vancouver location. Here is a clear comparison so you can pick the right one for your group.

Toyota Sienna8 passengersAWD option, mountain trips19+$1,000

Chrysler Grand Caravan — 7 Seats, Great Value

The Chrysler Grand Caravan is the most popular minivan rental choice in Vancouver. It seats seven people comfortably across three rows and has generous boot space when the rear seats are in use. Stow-and-go seating means the second and third rows fold flat into the floor in seconds, giving you a completely flat load area when you need it. This is the go-to van for airport group pickups, family holidays, and anyone who wants a reliable, spacious vehicle at a sensible price.

Honda Odyssey — 8 Seats, Smooth and Quiet

The Honda Odyssey seats eight and is one of the most comfortable minivans on the road. The cabin is quiet on the highway, the second-row seats are wide and supportive, and the infotainment screen is easy to use. The boot space behind the third row is smaller than the Grand Caravan’s when all seats are up, but the interior quality and ride comfort are noticeably higher. A good choice for longer journeys where passenger comfort matters.

Toyota Sienna — 8 Seats, Available with AWD

The Toyota Sienna is the only minivan on the market with an available all-wheel drive system, and that makes it a smart choice for winter travel or any trip that includes mountain roads. The Sienna is a hybrid, which means it is very fuel-efficient on long highway drives. Comfortable, refined, and reliable — it is worth asking about AWD availability when you book if your trip includes the Sea-to-Sky Highway or any BC mountain route in winter.

Kia Carnival — 8 Seats, Modern Feel

The Kia Carnival is the newest addition to the minivan category and brings a more modern, SUV-like exterior styling to the traditional minivan formula. Eight seats, a large boot, and a comfortable interior make it a solid choice for groups. The sliding rear doors and flexible seating work well for families with young children. If you want a minivan that does not look like a typical minivan, the Carnival is the one to ask for.

How to Rent a Minivan in Vancouver: Step by Step

Here is exactly how the booking and pickup process works with Mr. Rent A Car.

  1. Book Online — As Early as You Can

Go to mrrentacar.com and select your pickup location in Vancouver or Richmond. Under vehicle class, choose 7-passenger or 8-passenger minivan. Enter your dates and complete the booking. Save your confirmation email — it has your reference number and the shuttle phone number if you are picking up at the YVR offsite location. Minivans are popular and fleet availability drops fast during summer holidays and ski season, so book as early as possible.

  • Decide on Your Insurance

Before your pickup date, call your personal car insurance provider and your credit card company. Ask whether your existing coverage includes rental vehicles in British Columbia. Many premium credit cards include collision damage waiver as a cardholder benefit. If yours does, bring the original written policy to the counter — photocopies are not accepted. Sorting this before you arrive saves time and can save you money on optional counter insurance.

  • Get to the Depot

If you are picking up at the YVR airport location, call 604-303-0063 from the arrivals area when you land. The free shuttle will collect you and take you to 7780 River Road in Richmond in about five to ten minutes. If you are picking up from the Vancouver city location at 838 Drake Street or the Burnaby location at 6322 Kingsway, drive or take transit to the depot directly. All locations are well-signed and easy to find.

  • Bring the Right Documents

You need your original government-issued driver’s licence (no photocopies), the major credit card used to book the minivan, and your booking confirmation. If your licence is in a language other than English or French, bring your International Driving Permit alongside the original. If anyone else in your group will be driving, they must be present at the counter with their own original licence. Debit cards are not accepted for the security deposit.

  • Check the Agreement and Sort Any Add-Ons

Read through the rental agreement before signing. Confirm the vehicle model, pickup and return times, fuel level, and insurance selection. If you need a child seat or GPS unit, request these at the time of booking rather than at pickup — availability is not guaranteed on the day. Verify the return time matches your plans before you sign, as changes afterwards carry a $20 service fee.

  • Do the Full Vehicle Inspection

Before driving away, walk all the way around the minivan with a Mr. Rent A Car team member. Check every panel, bumper, sliding door, window, and wheel for existing marks. Make sure everything is noted on the condition report. Then take a short video on your phone of all four sides and the interior. This protects your $1,000 deposit from any wrongful damage claims when you return the vehicle.

  • Drive Away and Keep the Paperwork Safe

Put your rental agreement and the 24/7 roadside assistance number in the glove box before you leave. If a warning light comes on during your trip, pull over and call the helpline before continuing — driving with an active alert can affect your coverage. Follow posted speed limits: BC uses automated speed cameras and any fines come to your credit card plus an admin fee from Mr. Rent A Car.

  • Return on Time with the Tank Topped Up

Fill the fuel tank at a petrol station near the depot before returning. All rentals use a level-to-level fuel policy — return the van at the same fuel level as pickup to avoid a refuelling charge. There is a 30-minute grace period on return. After 30 to 120 minutes late, extra charges apply. After 120 minutes, a full extra day is added. Complete the final walkaround with the team, hand over the keys, and the deposit hold is released within a few business days.

Minivan for Rent

Best Group Road Trips from Vancouver in a Rental Minivan

Once you have the keys, British Columbia is ready for you. Here are the four trips that groups and families love most.

Whistler via Sea-to-Sky Highway — 2 Hours

Drive north on Highway 99 through West Vancouver, past Horseshoe Bay and Shannon Falls, and up to Whistler village. This is one of the most scenic highway drives in the world and a minivan handles it comfortably. In winter, ask about a Toyota Sienna with AWD for this route — winter tires or chains are legally required on Highway 99 between October and April. Check DriveBC for conditions before you leave on winter days.

Vancouver Island via BC Ferry — 3.5 Hours Total

Drive to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, about 30 minutes south of Vancouver, and board a BC Ferry to Swartz Bay near Victoria. Minivans fit easily on BC Ferries and the sailing through the Gulf Islands takes about 95 minutes. Victoria city centre is 25 minutes from Swartz Bay. Book your ferry sailing in advance during summer — peak sailings fill up fast and you do not want a group of eight people waiting through two or three extra sailings at the terminal.

Kelowna and the Okanagan Wine Country — 4 Hours

Take the Coquihalla Highway east from Hope to Merritt and drop south into Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. Wine tours, fruit stands, beautiful lakes, and outdoor activities make this a great multi-day group trip. A minivan is perfect here — everyone travels together, luggage is easy to manage, and you can pick up Okanagan wine without worrying about boot space. Aim for three or four days to see the valley properly.

Harrison Hot Springs Day Trip — 1 Hour 20 Minutes

Head east on Highway 1 through Abbotsford to Harrison Hot Springs on the edge of Harrison Lake. The natural hot springs, the lake views, and the relaxed pace make this an easy and enjoyable day trip for a group. A 7 or 8-passenger minivan handles the drive without any issues and parking at Harrison is straightforward. This works particularly well as a group day out for families visiting Vancouver for a few days.

Practical Tips for Driving a Rental Minivan in Vancouver

Parking a Minivan in the City

Minivans are longer than regular cars and need a slightly bigger parking space. Most downtown Vancouver parkades accommodate minivans without any problem — check the height clearance sign at the entrance if you are going underground. The EasyPark app works at most city parkades and makes paying easy. At Stanley Park, Whistler village, and ferry terminals, there are dedicated larger vehicle spaces that work well for minivans.

Fuel Costs for Longer Trips

Minivans are not the most fuel-efficient vehicles, but the Toyota Sienna hybrid is significantly better than the others on the highway. If your trip involves a lot of driving — say, Vancouver to Kelowna and back — it is worth asking about Sienna availability when you book. For shorter trips around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, fuel costs are manageable across a group of six to eight people. Fill up before returning to the depot to avoid the company’s refuelling fee.

Winter Driving in a Minivan

If you are renting a minivan between October and April and plan to drive any mountain route — Whistler, the Coquihalla, or any BC designated highway — winter tires or chains are legally required. The Toyota Sienna is the only minivan with available AWD, which gives better traction on snow and ice. Ask the Mr. Rent A Car team about Sienna availability and winter tire fitment when you book. Do not leave this conversation until the pickup day — availability depends on the fleet at the time of booking.

Child Seats in a Rental Minivan

If you need a child safety seat, request it when you make the booking. Mr. Rent A Car offers child seats for an additional daily fee. BC law specifies child seat requirements based on weight and height, so confirm the correct seat type when you book. Minivans have multiple LATCH anchor points and the wide doors make installing and accessing child seats much easier than in a standard sedan or SUV.

Ready to Book Your Minivan Rental in Vancouver?

Renting a minivan for your group trip in Vancouver is a straightforward process with Mr. Rent A Car. Book early, bring your original licence and the credit card you booked with, do the walkaround before you drive away, and fill the tank before you return. The team at Mr. Rent A Car has been doing this for nearly 30 years and the pickup process is designed to be fast and simple.

A minivan gives your group the space, comfort, and flexibility to enjoy British Columbia properly. Everyone travels together, the luggage fits, the doors slide open easily, and the fuel cost splits across the group. Whether you are heading to Whistler, catching the ferry to Vancouver Island, or exploring the Okanagan, a rental minivan is one of the best decisions a group can make. Call 604-303-0063 or book online at mrrentacar.com to check availability and get on the road.

Minivan for Rent

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a minivan in Vancouver from Mr. Rent A Car?

Yes. Mr. Rent A Car offers several minivan models at the Vancouver and YVR airport locations, including the Chrysler Grand Caravan (7 seats) and the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Kia Carnival (all 8 seats). Book online at mrrentacar.com or call 604-303-0063 to check availability for your dates. Book early during summer and ski season as minivans are very popular with families and groups.

How many people does a rental minivan hold?

The Chrysler Grand Caravan seats 7 passengers. The Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Kia Carnival all seat 8 passengers. All models have three rows of seating. The rear rows can be folded or removed to increase boot space when you need to carry more luggage than people.

What is the minimum age to rent a minivan in Vancouver?

The minimum rental age at Mr. Rent A Car is 19 years old. Drivers aged 19 to 24 can rent a minivan but will pay a young driver daily surcharge that reflects the higher insurance cost for that age group. Minivans are available to drivers aged 19 and over — unlike some luxury and electric vehicle categories which require the renter to be 25 or older.

How much is the deposit for a minivan rental?

The security deposit for a minivan rental is $1,000 CAD for drivers aged 25 and over. This is a temporary authorization hold on your credit card, not a charge. It is released within a few business days after the vehicle is returned in good condition. A major credit card is required — Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and cash are not accepted for the deposit hold.

Is the Toyota Sienna minivan available with all-wheel drive?

The Toyota Sienna is the only minivan in the Mr. Rent A Car fleet with an available all-wheel drive system. This makes it a popular choice for winter travel and for any trip involving mountain roads where AWD provides better traction. Ask specifically about AWD Sienna availability when you book, particularly for rentals between October and April when winter road conditions apply on BC mountain highways.

Can I take a rental minivan on a BC Ferry?

Yes. BC Ferries carry vehicles of all sizes and minivan rental travel on BC Ferries is permitted under standard Mr. Rent A Car agreements. The main terminal for Vancouver Island is Tsawwassen, about 30 minutes south of Vancouver. Book your ferry crossing in advance during summer weekends and public holidays — peak sailings fill up and groups with a minivan do not want to wait through multiple sailings at the terminal.

What documents do I need to rent a minivan in Vancouver?

You need your original government-issued driver’s licence (no photocopies), the major credit card used to make the booking, and your booking confirmation. If your licence is in a language other than English or French, bring your International Driving Permit alongside the original. All additional drivers must be present at the counter at pickup with their own original licences.

Are child seats available with minivan rentals?

Yes. Child safety seats are available from Mr. Rent A Car for an additional daily fee. Request the seat at the time of booking to ensure availability — do not wait until the day of pickup. BC law specifies child seat requirements based on the child’s weight and height, so confirm the correct seat type when you book. Minivans have multiple anchor points and the wide sliding doors make fitting and accessing child seats straightforward.

Do I need winter tires on a rental minivan in Vancouver?

Within Vancouver city limits, all-season tires are adequate for most winter conditions. On designated BC mountain highways — including Highway 99 to Whistler — winter tires or chains are legally required between October and April. If your minivan rental covers any mountain driving in winter, ask about winter tire availability or the Toyota Sienna with AWD at the time of booking. Raise this when you book, not on the day of pickup.

Can I pick up a minivan at Vancouver Airport?

Yes. Mr. Rent A Car operates a free shuttle from Vancouver International Airport to the depot at 7780 River Road in Richmond. When you land, call 604-303-0063 from the baggage claim area. The team will tell you which shuttle pickup point to go to outside the terminal. The shuttle to the depot takes about five to ten minutes. Minivans are available at the YVR offsite location — b
